19th April 2018

Raines played Erith School away in the AoC Sports Basketball Mens Premier Cup Semi Finals, collecting a 73-71 Win to advance to the Cup finals.

Raines were led by Jason Prince with 29 points 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
Shakeem Giwa finished with 15points in 20min off the bench.

The game started off fast and remained close with Erith Taking the first quarter. 2nd quarter saw the East London Team playing strong defence on Eriths key players. Both teams played hard and forced alot of turnovers and missed shots.

Raines started the 3rd with strong offensive plays from Daniel Obeng, who made some big baskets and collected some key rebounds. Some Good Defencive stops limited Eriths tranistion baskets holding them to 1 fast breaks while Raines remained aggressive on offence attacking the paint.

Raines were well prepared and organised on defence slowing Erith offence and doing a good job keeping their guards from catching a rythem from 3 point range.

Raines were down heading into the final quarter and but made good defensive stops which created fast breaks. The final 3 minutes of the game, Rained got some key stops and knocked down big Free throws and that proved to be the difference as they secured the victory.

Coach Laurent Irish (Coach L)Said: “We continued to focus on our defensive pressure and sharing the ball on the offensive end. Erith did a great job of keeping the game close everytime we tried to break the game open. Their peneration and Rebounding caused us problems in the first half but once we made some defencive adjustments it slowed their offence down going into the 4th Quarter. We went to a small line up to try and take Eriths big man out the game, who was causing us real problems Rebounding all game. Our 2-3 Zone slowed them down in the last 2mins. Jason Prince had the biggest defensive stop of the game, taking a charge on Eriths starting point guard to foul him out with under 1min left. with the game tired 71-71, Simon Olanipekun made the biggest shot of match with a left handed layup in traffic to put us up 73-71 with 25 sec left in the game. Time Out Called by Coach Bucknall we knew they would go for the 3 pointer to try win the game. With Raines needed one stop to win the game, the boys played smart swithing screens and closed out to thier 3 point attemp, which was enough to book a ticket to the 2018 AoC Sport Basketball Men’s Premier Knockout Cup Final.

“Our defensive execution and rebounding will need to be a lot better to beat Myerscough in the Cup finals on May 2nd.

Myself and Coach Perry Lawson are very proud of our team for their effort vs Erith ànd their commitment and hard work throughout the season. Reaching a ABL Mens final in our first year is a great accomplishment for Raines Basketball Academy.

We look forward to the match up Vs Myerscough in the finals.
